One day, a man named Rasheed unexpectedly met a group of righteous and kind-hearted people. They treated him with love and compassion. They patiently guided him, helped him leave his addiction, and slowly encouraged him to return to a better path in life.
With their support, Rasheed gave up his old habits and decided to join them on their journey of self-improvement and spreading goodness.
From that day onward, whenever Rasheed traveled with his new friends, they introduced him to others in a very particular way:
“This is our brother Rasheed. He used to be a big drug addict, but with the blessings of good company, he has left that life behind.”
Wherever they went, the same introduction was repeated — in every street, every neighborhood, and every gathering.
Their intention was to show people the power of positive influence and how a person could change through good companionship. However, with every introduction, more and more people who had never known about Rasheed’s past started learning about it.
One day, as usual, the group introduced Rasheed in front of a gathering and said:
“Brother Rasheed, please tell these people how the company of good people changed your life and helped you leave your addiction.”
At that moment, Rasheed’s eyes filled with tears.
He began to cry and said:
“My brothers, praise be to Allah, who had always protected my honor and hidden my mistakes. But then I met these good friends. I swear by Allah, I was never as embarrassed when I was committing my mistakes as I have become after leaving them behind.”
The entire gathering became silent.
Everyone realized their mistake.
They understood that while their intention was to encourage goodness, they had unknowingly exposed someone’s past and caused him pain.
Moral of the Story
Encouraging people toward goodness is a noble act, but repeatedly revealing someone’s past mistakes is not true guidance — it can become a source of hurt and humiliation.
Just as Allah protects the faults of His servants, people should also learn to protect the dignity of others.
True kindness is not making someone feel ashamed of who they were. True kindness is giving someone the strength and opportunity to become better.
